Great ear and rhythm training for pop rock

Mark Harrison has finally found his writing groove. The book is 56 pages long. The first 28 pages are devoted to specific rhythm exercises. The second 28 pages cover licks and styles of selected artists. In the exercise section, Harrison presents two bar phases in straight eighth and sixteenth note rhythms. Each exercise is played three times per CD track in ever increasing tempos, ie., slow, medium and fast, with the bpms explicitly written down. In the second chapter, swing eighth and sixteenth note rhythms are added. Here there are four exercises presented for all four types of rhythms. Then each of the four exercises are strung together in a single continuing track, played over a bass and drum backing track, again in three increasing tempos. Harrison gives a three paragraph analysis of each exercise, explaining both hands rhythm and chord movement. The individual exercises may not be to your taste, or suitable for your style, but having the exercises written out in sheet music format with the chords above the staff will get your eyes, ears, hands, and brain working together. Having a rhythm backing track with the tempos written out is very helpful to get you practicing. There is a lot of information clearly presented in the first 28 pages. The second half of the book is devoted to the styles of various pop rock artists. Coldplay and Ben Folds are the first two presented. No hard rock. No southern rock. In chapter three, each phrase is played at three different tempos on the CD and has a three or four paragraph analysis. In chapter four extended etudes are presented at two tempos, slow and full speed. So if you are an accomplished sight reader, working with a good teacher, and have good skills, this book may be unnecessary. But if you are a typical play by ear performer, this book will reward you proportional to the effort you put into it. I have a lot of Mark Harrison books. This book follows a really nice formula. I wish that he had always written out the tempos above his exercises. That is very helpful if you want to play along with your own rhythm machine.

Good book for beginners

As a keyboardist and teacher I believe it's a good book for anybody starting to get in the business of playing some rock funck chops.If you are and advanced intermediate player maybe many things might look quite simple or that you may not play them in any live gig situation.Anyway I believe the autor it's a great teacher and musician and almost all of his book no matter waht level you are they give you some fresh ideas or something new to play and put in your bag for the next show.So as a result I's say good book in my opinión for beginners and low intermediate players to start rocking
