A fascinating perspective on why so many of us are deeply unhappy

While this book is not going to be to everybody's taste (then again, which book ever is?) it does contain a great deal of useful perspective if one is truly ready to hear it. The gist of the book is that we are all somewhat prisoners of our own making, trapped in a web of toxic emotion and a world of rampant materialism. Bauer posits that we have all we really need to be happy inside us already, and that a change in the way that we see ourselves and our place in the world can help to bring about very real changes in the rest of our lives.
Much of what he says makes perfect sense, and I found myself nodding and re-reading several of the passages over several times. It's one of those "it feels as if the author is speaking directly to me" sort of books. There are, however, concepts and sections that are going to be difficult for some people to swallow, and a number of them I found very hard to believe; ideas about the way in which the universe actually works, the flow of energy, and certain metaphysical theories that range from the mystical to the downright fantastical. I read through those sections, took them with a huge grain of salt, and moved on to firmer ground. There were plenty of take-home points that stuck with me long after I had finished the book. Each chapter ends with self-assessment questions and exercises, plus a number of positive affirmations for those who are so inclined. I enjoyed Mr. Bauer's book a great deal, and it will almost certainly be read a second and third time somewhere down the road.
