Just right

I've heard Professor Kerbel speak, and he is incredible. I therefore was not surprised to find his book excellent. I was actually pleased to see a RedState founder to find it disappointing. "With a more centralized structure that is something of a throwback to the electronic media of the twentieth century, the right blogosphere is Microsoft Windows to the progressive blogosphere's open source operating system, Unix. For instance, the popular conservative blog RedState, whose interactive qualities echo those of Daily Kos, was created by a 527 group (a tax-exempt organization established to engage in political action) and is owned by a conservative publishing conglomerate whose holdings include the Evans-Novak Political Report and the Conservative Book Club."

As the man who conceived of RedState in March 2004, and co-founded it with Mike Krempasky and Ben Domenech in July 2004, I'm astonished to learn that our efforts were funded by a 527 -- instead of from our own pockets, as seemed the case at the time. We did, in fact, found a 527 later, to comply with the laws on fundraising for selected candidates -- but at no time was RedState funded or supported by anything but what we could spare from our own household budgets. This remained true until the website was purchased by Eagle Publishing (long before which I'd left the site) sometime around December 2006.

The bottom line here is that RedState, at least, was as much a bottom-up, "open source," grassroots operation as anything on the left -- and achieved its material success, leading to its corporate purchase, as such. The point that Kerbel tries to make is invalidated by the truth about the very example he chooses.

Professor Kerbel might know this if he'd done basic research. But this isn't a scholarly work. It's a shabby polemic on "the progressive left and the professors who love them." Find a friend who's received it for free -- there are plenty of them -- but don't squander your money on this inaccurate and deeply flawed effort.

Takin' It To Another Level

This urban novel by street legend Darryl "God" Whiting is an excellent read that will leave you wanting more. The author is actually the main character so his personality and beliefs come through in this fictional tale of what God would like to do if he came home right now. But that's not the case as he is still in prison, still this book reads like a revenge fantasy. A very in depth and entertaining revenge fantasy. Almost like a blueprint or how to on how to be a drug dealer written by someone who knows and is paying the ultimate price for his exploits in the streets, life in prison. The real God has been portrayed in the 1998 film In Too Deep and his story has also been featured in F.E.D.S. magazine and on American Justice on A&E. His fictional tale is just as intriguing but instead of going back he goes forward. Definitely check this out. If you like the classic urban fiction novels like Kwame Teague's Dutch series, Teri Woods True to the Game and Sister Souljah's The Coldest Winter Ever you will definitely enjoy this as it comes straight from the penitentiary to the streets. The early 21st century has provided an extraordinary case study of an industry in flux, and one that throws light on the relationship between culture and economy, between passion and calculation. This book provides a theoretically grounded account of the implications of digital technology on the musical economy, and develops the concept of the musical network to understand the transformation of this economy over space and through time.

Andrew Leyshon, Professor of Economic Geography, University of Nottingham

Andrew Leyshon is Professor of Economic Geography and Head of the School of Geography (2011-2015), University of Nottingham. He has authored and edited several books and published over 100 academic papers and chapters. He was Editor-in-Chief of Geoforum between 1995-2006, has presented over 90 conference papers and seminars, been a Principal Investigator on six major Economic and Social Research Council grants. He was, until 2012, Deputy Director of the Financial Services Research Forum at Nottingham University Business School. He is a member of the Editorial Board of Environment and Planning A, and of the Editorial Advisory Board of Economy and Society. In 2007 he was elected as an Academician of the Academy of Social Sciences and he is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of British Geographers.

BioArt profiles contemporary art that demonstrates how advances in the life sciences and their application as biotechnology have a dislocating effect on culture. Specifically, these advances alter our notions of the self, environment, and the definition of life. Popular understanding strains to catch up with these changes while artists are detecting and vigorously responding to them, creating new images, sculpture, living material installations, video, and performance. In this way the work of bioartists echoes that of the Surrealists of the early 20th century who reacted to the new terrain of the unconscious and widespread anxiety in the aftermath of industrialized war.

About the Author
William Myers is a writer, teacher, and curator based in Amsterdam. He has worked for the Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, the Guggenheim, and Genspace, the first community biotech lab in the United States. His writing has appeared in Metropolis magazine, The Architect’s Newspaper, and New York Magazine.
