Covers A Lot of Ground In A Clear, Refreshingly Hype-Free Manner

Regardless of how much 'stock' you put into quant methods and technical analysis, I think it's worth any investor's time to understand the principles, patterns and indicators-as-tools - for no other reason than plenty of individual and institutional activity is guided by it - however publicly acknowledged or not.

The market may always be largely random but any degree of input and possible influence is, to my mind, as worthy of study as much as sector and economic fundamentals. To other people it's all just more of Buffett's Mr. Market and Noise, but those people are not likely to be drawn to this book.

The real strength of 'Technical Analysis for Dummies' is just in the detailed descriptions of reading bars, Japanese candlesticks, small and larger patterns and various indicators, stochastic and not, used as transaction triggers. Rockefeller does write and explain all this and more very well in clear, what I call 'un-hyped' language (she's not selling seminars, other books or wrangling for a TV gig). There are also plenty of easy-to-read diagrams - I especially liked the material on drawing trend lines, something that's often glossed over in other books.

But let's face it: I think back to the brick-and-mortar bookstore on lower Broadway below Wall St. where I spent many a lunch hour browsing bookshelves full of technical analysis books. Factual information is what our information age does extremely well; but organizing and providing useful application and context - not so much.

And this is where 'Technical Analysis for Dummies' provides reader value. The author covers the practical and financial preparation, follow-through and ongoing maintenance - not to mention the real 'head game', the psychology that makes technical trading often so counterintuitive. You truly can become your own worst enemy if you don't learn what to trust and what requires real and constant work.

I wouldn’t recommend the book to readers brand new to investing - it's not a "What's the stock market and how does it work" kind of book. If you've 'dabbled' (as in, lost some serious dough) along the way, chasing after what you were convinced was the Trend, you've probably got enough background and the mindset to tackle this book.

The most important pre-req is an openness to the possibilities technical analysis offers, a willingness to put aside stereotypical thinking and set realistic expectations and, frankly, the discipline to filter and turn off much of the daily chatter that entices so many people to abandon the numbers before their eyes and act strictly on emotion.

A Really Good Introduction to Technical Trading -- But Not for Beginners

I received my Series 7 license almost 20 years ago. Technical trading was part of the study program, but more emphasis was placed on fundamental analysis -- the more tangible elements of a company's financial statements and their market segment. But one can't deny the effect that psychology plays on the market and how these trends can be identified and used to make buy and sell decisions.

The reason I say this isn't for beginners is that the author makes the assumption (and rightly so) that you are familiar with financial terms, the markets and how they operate, trading, and the key elements of fundamental analysis. Without a decent grasp of these basic elements, a lot of the valuable information presented within will be overlooked. Two good Dummies books to get you up to speed would be Investing For Dummies and Fundamental Analysis For Dummies. And for a good, all around overview, Benjamin Graham's The Intelligent Investor: The Definitive Book on Value Investing. A Book of Practical Counsel (Revised Edition) comes highly recommended.

The charts and terminology used in technical analysis can be intimidating; however, much of it can be boiled down to from a few core elements:

1. Prices tend to move in trends
2. Trends tend to continue
3. Patterns tend to repeat themselves

At 360 pages, Barbara Rockefeller does a very good job of outlining and explaining the elements of technical analysis -- Support and Resistance, candlestick charting, and determining chart patterns. She's able to boil down complex terminology into layman's terms and provides helpful reminders throughout the book on topics covered beforehand.

For me, this was a greater primer to brush up on this topic. Technical analysis offers no guarantees, but it can be a helpful tool in qualifying stocks and indices that meet specific objective criteria. Educating yourself on the tools of technical analysis can help to determining the best time to establish a new stock position, or to get out of an existing position, whether locking in a profit or cutting a loss.

I read this book cover to cover, and so can you

I began reading the book during July of 2015, the summer that I was waiting to start my next job. I was reading a number of other books at the same time, and I will be honest, this one still didn't grab me. Once I was employed, the book sat for a few months.

Somewhere along the time-line of my new job, it occurred to me that I am tired of working for idiots. Reading business books on such topics of leadership, branding, management, etc. was only underscoring this point. This is nothing new; I am no spring chicken, and I am too far along to believe that the next job would be better. What I needed was a paradigm shift, to to earn money for myself and be my own boss. I don't ever want to have to clean up the mess that some cowboy executive director makes with his rookie moves straight out of the 80's.

So at this point in my life, trading makes a lot of sense. So why didn't I adopt this earlier? It's a case of "once bit, twice shy." You see, I bought into the "buy and hold" motif. I lost a lot of hard earned money in the dot com crash because I believed "it would come back." As Michael Marcus once said, "More money is lost listening to brokers than any other way." So, I was jaded by trading.

Barbara Rockefeller has changed that. Now I see possibilities! I now see myself in a new career of trading at home instead of fighting traffic and cleaning up someone else's short-term thinking. Having finished Technical Analysis for Dummies, I've seen a new light. In this book, (and The Global Trader), Barbara Rockefeller dispels many of the myths of trading that have kept me back.

Once I realized what I wanted, I had some traction, and I finished the book. It took me months because it is chock full of information, and I really wanted to understand it. This is not a get rich quick book. True to the title, the concepts are easy enough for anyone interested to understand, but I found I needed to read it in bites because it's more than a mouthful. I also contend this is a "read twice" book.

As for some specifics about the book:

Much of the book describes how indicators work. This is the stuff that takes a while to digest. But the book also has sprinkled bits of wisdom, and I could tell that one person with strong opinions wrote this book. For example, Barbara was describing a trader who pushes a price by calling him a "joker." Love it!

The only thing I didn't like about the book was all the forward references, i.e. "see chapter 12." When I read a book, I don't like to skip around. Even so, this is a minor point. It may actually be corrected in the 3rd Edition.

One think that might be neat: add a chart of a dozen or so indicators. One column might be lag/lead. Another column might show correlation to other indicators. Another column might be, "Use with" and list other indicators with which this one plays well.

To sum up: I was truly lucky to have found this book.

P.s. I dropped Barbara a line. She replied and was quite gracious. She even gave me a chapter of another book she wrote. She's a real person.

great for anyone who wants more free time

The author's tongue-in-cheek style coupled with no nonsense and sensible advise takes the drudgery out of housework. I have been able to save so much time and work half as hard to keep the same amount of floor space clean. When we built our new house, I picked up a lot of his suggestions for floor coverings, paint and windows that make cleaning a snap. I have gotten this book for wedding showers, birthdays, and thank-you's -- it makes the perfect gift!

A Very Useful Book!

This book is the most useful book on cleaning I have read. The author owns a cleaning business and shares tips on how to very efficiently and effectively both clean and de-clutter your home. He also discusses ways to keep the house from getting dirty to start with. I've used his tips for years now and have just re-read my copy of this and refreshed my memory [and got even more ideas!].
The author also writes very humorously, so it is an easy and fun book to read. Nothing too heavy but full of great ideas and suggestions. He is writing to an older generation perhaps, his ideas about housewives seem a bit out of date, but otherwise it is an enjoyable and extremely helpful book.

Freakin Awesome!

I've been a mega man fan all my life, but that doesn't mean that I've been a big fan of all the different types of artwork for each series. The ones that have caught my eyes over the years have been the Mega Man X series and the Mega Man Zero series for the GameBoy Advance/DS.

This book in particular is a major showcase on how much time and thought is spent on making this game come to life. There are several pictures of the hero and the enemies in this book. From conceptual to the finished version, you get a pretty good look at what was included (and no included) in the game.

Many of the chapters are broken up into whatever title the Mega Man was created, and it shows you what bosses/characters were in that version. Towards the end, they show you some of the characters that were created but was never implemented into the game.

There are a few pages, however, where one reviewer mentioned that the words were cut off. No big deal, really. Most of the translated Japanese text was done well, although there are a few pages that don't translate it for you. This didn't bother me, since the artwork speaks for itself.

The cover of the book is like a holographic type, so it's nice and shiny. Trust me, you got to check this one out.

Megaman Zero dream book!

I am a fan of the Megaman Zero series. I love the hardcore gameplay and rating system and when I read about this book last year and saw it was sold out I was sadden but I kept checking to see if it restocked. Now after such a long, LONG time it is back and my goodness, I wasn't going to miss out a second time. This is a great book for the fans of the series. The art is what took me into the game as well, and there is TON of that in here. I love the reflective cover of the book and the interviews as well inside. If your a fan of the series, don't pass this up, a great buy!

Beautiful

This art book has some beautiful artwork from the Megaman (Rockman) Zero series. It has pictures of many characters including bosses and even the Cyber-Elves. There are a few small sketches, and some screenshots from the games themselves.

This book is pretty good, but it could use some more sketches (like more sketches of the 4 Guardians, etc). However, it is a very nice book with plenty of Zero art. I would recommend to the Megaman Zero fans. (I could never finish the games due to their difficulty, but the artwork is truly beautiful).

About the Author

Richard Malott, PhD, BCBA-D, has been teaching behavior analysis for 50 years, 3 at Denison University and now 47 at Western Michigan University, working with BA, MA, and PhD students. Originally, he taught an intro behavior-analysis course to 1000 students per semester, who produced 1000 lever-pressing rats per year. Now, his students only condition 230 rats per year, but they also do 130 self-management projects and provide 13,500 hours of training to autistic children each year.  

 

Malott’s published research includes basic experimental work on schedules of reinforcement and stimulus control, and applied work on university instruction, organizational behavior management, self-management, and autism.

 

In 1974, Malott co-founded the Midwestern Association for Behavior Analysis, which evolved into the Association for Behavior Analysis International (ABAI). He has presented in 14 countries and has received two Fulbright Senior Scholar Awards. In 2002, he also received the Award for Public Service in Behavior Analysis from ABAI). In 2009, he was elected to become a Fellow of ABAI. And in 2011-2012, he served as president of ABAI. In 2012, he also received a Distinguished Teaching Award from Western Michigan University.

Best textbook ever written

This was probably one of the most fun textbooks I've ever read for a class! It's written in such a relaxed and engaging way. It did not feel like knowledge was being shoved down my throat. It felt as if the writers were just acquaintances having an interesting chat in which I learned a lot from. The little stories and dialogue really helped the concepts stick and made learning the material extremely clear and comprehensive!

If you had to summarize Fail-Safe Investing in three words, it would probably be these: Embrace the obvious. Look at your job, Browne advises. You get ahead because of your experience, education, and common sense. Your job is the reason you have money to invest in the first place. So the first of Browne's 17 rules is, "Build Your Wealth upon Your Career." Don't jeopardize your career; it's going to take many years of smart investing before your earnings will surpass what you earn at your day job--if they ever do.

The other rules aren't quite as obvious, but equally simple. Browne explains the difference between investing (making a long-term plan and sticking with it) and speculating (betting that you can beat the overall market during a specific period). He shows how life savings are easily lost when you borrow money to invest rather than investing only the money you already have. Browne also suggests a portfolio that he says is the simplest and safest possible for continual, steady returns above inflation: an equal division among stocks, bonds, gold, and cash. That covers an investor in times of prosperity (stocks), inflation (gold), deflation (bonds), and recession (cash). While many investment analysts would undoubtedly gag if you presented them with a portfolio that consisted of a 50 percent investment in gold and cash, Browne nonetheless makes a compelling argument that such an allocation makes it easier to sleep at night. THE BEST-KEPT SECRET IN THE INVESTING WORLD...

...according to Harry Browne, is the fact that "almost nothing turns out as expected." And yet, unlike in most other areas of their lives, in which they rightly view soothsayers as entertainers devoid of an inside track to the future justifying any go-for-broke departure from the straight and narrow of prudential common sense, somehow in the sphere of investing, perhaps driven by the fear of being "left behind" by the latest opportunities for speculative windfalls (and, need we add, spectacular losses?), millions of otherwise practical people are enchanted by one siren song or another: the claims of self-anointed "insiders" with "perfect" track records (i.e., a few lucky haphazard predictions from yesteryear masking the several dozen by the same advisor which turned sour), or the "scientific" systems of various gurus which start to fail the minute your money is on the line. By contrast, the desires of the great majority of us for the protection and enhancement of that part of our savings we cannot afford to lose as we prepare for retirement and beyond, can be best served by an investment strategy which emphasizes safety and simplicity - and which is diversified across four major investment media - stocks, bonds, gold and cash - so that, no matter what the uncertain future brings to the economy, our portfolios contain investments geared to respond well to each major trend - prosperity, inflation, tight money, or deflation. And with this strategy in place for those assets readers are counting on for their long-term survival, they still may, if they wish, speculate with that portion of their fortunes they know they can afford to lose. Ultimately, Browne's investment advice is a sound application of what, in that intoxicating book of personal philosophy which has helped so many in their quest for freedom and self-understanding, HOW I FOUND FREEDOM IN AN UNFREE WORLD (1973), he calls "The Uncertainty Trap: the urge to act as if your information were totally certain." And in their herd-based quest to sound "professional" and ahead of the competition, too many investment pundits and "experts" present themselves as "in the know" about not just why the market rose or fell today (I'm sure I'm not the only one who enjoys a great horselaugh whenever he hears broadcast reports to the effect that "the market rose today on rumors [or fears, or puffs of smoke] that..."), but what it will do tomorrow - and next year (as the always good-humored Browne points out, anyone with an authentic gift for financial prophecy wouldn't be wasting his time hawking newsletters and trading systems, or playing the talking-heads game on cable - he'd be helping the likes of George Soros and Rupert Murdoch invest a few spare billion, en route to owning his own country). Everything Browne writes merits the closest attention, and in this, his self-proclaimed last book on investing, he here presents a sort of summa of the common-sense wisdom he has garnered from thirty years of watching the rise and fall of markets - and he does so with his customary directness, clarity, and humility. He remains in a class by himself, and many of us will always be in his debt for the uncommon ideas he has expressed so ably. And above all for his own example - for the standard he has set.

Forever changed

I read a lot of books--but rarely write reviews. This one, however, is a game-changer.

Before reading this book, I was addicted to all kinds of financial pornography: books, newsletters, investment clubs etc. All of it was in search of the holy grail of investment knowledge...how to beat the market. Sometimes the stress of market volatility would keep me up at night. Then I met Harry Browne and his wisdom.

He makes a very strong case that no one can predict the future in financial markets. Even the cockiest fund managers typically perform poorly over the long run. So I asked myself: why am I wasting all this time and energy trying to beat the market? Isn't there a way to get the historical returns of stocks (about 10%/year) with little stress-inducing volatility or my most precious resource--time? Browne says yes...it's called the Permanent Portfolio.

It's like that rotisserie chicken oven on late night infomercials: "Just set it and forget it!" All of the economic environments are covered by Browne's Permanent Portfolio: inflation, deflation, prosperity, recession. No matter what people are worried about today, you're covered. You can let everyone else debate (because they don't know anyway). Browne's Portfolio has returned an average of 9.9% (roughly 5-6% over inflation) with extraordinarily low volatility for the last 40 years--which puts your mind at ease so you can go off and live life without worry.

That level of peace-of-mind has no value--it's priceless. I'll be forever indebted to Harry Browne for writing this book. I highly encourage you to read it and do a little research for yourself. I think you'll feel the same way.

Chapter one focuses upon the artistic collaboration between Hubert Parry and Robert Bridges; chapter two explores how Charles Villiers Stanford consistently returned to Tennyson's texts throughout his compositional career; chapters three and four suggest how an orchestral drama by Granville Bantock might represent a close reading of a poem by Robert Browning, and how structure and imagery in a novel by Edward Bulwer Lytton might inform a reading of Edward Elgar's Piano Quintet op.84. The final chapter offers parallels between narrative strategies in Victorian travel literature (including works by Charles Dickens and George Gissing) and the nature of musical events in Elgar's concert overture In the South op.50. Issues highlighted in the book include the vexed relationship between words and music, the refiguring of literary narratives as musical structures, and the ways in which musical settings or representations of literary texts might be seen as critical 'readings' of those texts. I thouroughly enjoyed this book. Very simple explanation of the essence of "e to ix" to any one not exposed to math. I passed the book on to an uncle. Then I was sorry I did it as soon as I handed the book because I remembered it's now out of publication. In the end still happy to have an English teacher exposed to this book.

It is a very good attempt at an 'all a young (or older) woman ...

This book is now quite old (copyright 1991) but the information it contains is still perfectly valid. It is a very good attempt at an 'all a young (or older) woman needs to know about the 'mechanics of her reproductive system' book. As well as the usual 'straight out of the High School Biology book' stuff regarding menstrual cycles, it goes into considerable (but not too deep) depth about sexually transmissible diseases, how abortions are performed, self examination, other medical procedures such as hysterectomy, vaginal reconstruction, tubal ligation and even vasectomy. This could be a good book for a mother to give to a daughter in her mid-teens. The daughter would keep it on her book shelf and browse it as and when she feels the need. The many photos of women's genitals are probably reassuring to a young woman that what her genitals look like is normal, but it also means this is not a book to leave on the coffee table, or have in a high school library.
My only criticism of the book would be that a lot of the black and white drawings would have been easier to understand if they had been colour.
The target audience for this book is very specific, but if you are in that audience, this is a very good book.

Worth every penny

From the amazing illustrations by then-artist, now-nurse Suzann Gage of everything important to know about women's bodies and reproductive health--from cervical and breast self exams and the effect areas of various forms of birth control, to an "inner view of a woman's breasts" that shows how "milk secretion [is] like a shower head" (wish I'd seen that before I breast-fed!), a wonderful vulva/hymen/cervix photo gallery, and radical redefinitions of the biology of the clitoris--this is a fantastic book for any girl or woman who wants to know how her body works. It was a powerful publication in 1981 and it's just as good today. Further, it's a reminder that the 1970s nurtured a flourishing of activists who believed in self/adult education, and produced widely accessible and useful publications. The book should be updated and reissued, but until then, buy the original publishing--it's worth the cost.

Ask women when you want to know about female pleasure, birth and contraception,

As a feminist sex educator this book is the closest I'll ever get to having a Sex Bible about how a woman's body functions. Whenever I have a question I go to my bookshelf and start reading "A New View." These women are among the many unsung heroes. Their book was originally published by Simon & Schuster but at the end of the first year, one of the "good old boys" finally noticed they described how women could easily administer their own abortions at home with some thin plastic tubing and a suction pump. The book was GONE in a flash! I"ll let you figure out why.
