About the Author
JAKOB ARJOUNI was born in Frankfurt, Germany in 1964, the son of acclaimed German playwright Hans Gunter Michelson. He wrote numerous books, including the novels Chez Max and Magic Hoffmann, which was shortlisted for the IMPAC Award. But it is for his series of five mysteries featuring the Turkish immigrant detective Kemal Kayankaya for which he became best known. Bestsellers throughout Europe and the winner of the German Thriller Prize, they have also been turend into wildly popular movies in his home country. Arjouni died from pancreatic cancer at age forty-eight in January 2013.

ANSELM HOLLO is the author of more than thirty books, most recently the essay collection Caws & Causeries and Notes on the Possibilities and Attractions of Existence: New and Selected Poems 1965-2000, which received the San Francisco Poetry Center's Book Award for 2001. His translation of Pentii Saarikoski's Trilogy received the 2004 Harold Morton Landon Translation Award from the Academy of American Poets.

The first Kayankaya novel

The Ergün family is troubled. Vasif Ergün emigrated to Germany from Turkey and worked as a garbage collector before he became involved with some shady characters. After his death, his son-in-law, Ahmed Hamul, followed in Vasif's questionable footsteps. Vasif's wife is the backbone of the family. His son Yilmaz is bitter that his father preferred the company of Hamul. Vasif's daughter Ayse has problems of her own, problems that other family members try to hide.

Now Hamul has been stabbed to death, his corpse unceremoniously dumped behind a brothel. The police aren't excited about the death of a Turk, so Hamul's widow, Ilter, turns to private investigator Kemal Kayankaya to find her husband's killers. Kayankaya's investigation is hampered by uncooperative family members, unhelpful police officers, and sinister figures who threaten his welfare.

Happy Birthday, Turk!, the first of Jakob Arjouni's Kayankaya novels, is a fine example of German noir. Kayankaya is a hard-drinking, easily angered outcast, an orphaned Turk who, although raised as a German citizen, endures the daily bigotry of Germans who don't like his dark skin and non-Aryan features. Kayankaya's intelligence and biting wit do nothing to ingratiate him with his fellow Germans -- not that he tries to win friends. More often, he tries to win fights with his powerful fists.

The plot of Happy Birthday, Turk! is tight and filled with twists that are interesting if not entirely surprising. The pace is swift. I admire writers of crime fiction who don't waste words. Arjouni captures people and locations (and food) in a few perfect sentences. A waiter: "He reminded me of a gay hippopotamus." A living room: "All it needed was an open drain, and the place could have been cleaned with a garden hose." Arjouni isn't Raymond Chandler, but he has his own distinctive style. Happy Birthday, Turk! isn't my favorite Kayankaya novel, but it is a strong start to an excellent (if short-lived) series.

German Noir

I stumbled on the four Kayankaya mysteries written by Jakob Arjouni searching for essays by the poet Anselm Hollo. While I was aware that he had worked as a translator, I had no idea these translations existed. And while this volume, for example, was translated in 1987, the same year the book appeared in the original German. I couldn't find a previous English language publication.

The back cover says that this is the second book in the series, but the publisher's web site identifies it as the first. Whatever, it is interesting to see how other cultures translate a genre that originated so squarely within the confines of a single country: the United States. The short answer on this German noir: fairly well.

The plot is too stereotyped noir to bother mentioning. None of the characters in the book are particularly virtuous, with the exception of the client, but the characters society expects to be the most morally reprehensible (immigrant heroin dealers) are more to be pitied than reviled, and it is those in power (particularly some police) who are simply evil. The component of the book that is original is the particular immigrant community (Turks in Frankfurt) and the use of language.

Most noir detectives are outside the magic circle because they are fallen (ex-cop being the most prevalent), drunks and disrespectful of authority. Our drunk of a disrespectful P.I. is most obviously on the far outside of society not because of these factors, but because he is the son of Turkish immigrants, raised in Frankfurt by a German couple after being orphaned as a boy. He doesn't speak Turkish, hasn't been to Turkey, and certainly doesn't feel any connection to that country. But in almost all of his interactions he is treated as an inferior. Nazism may be officially dead in 1980's Germany, but racial assumptions of superiority are alive and well throughout this book. There is a veneer of civility in his dealings with Aryan Germans, but it is thin and usually discarded within seconds of meeting our detective. Typical of noir P.I.'s he makes no attempt at sociability, and often jumps in to be rude (or violent) before the other has a chance to start things. This becomes old very fast, and the repartee between our tough guy and his adversaries is not up to even moderately good classic noir. And the fight scenes are very poorly described.

The other distinctive part of the book is its take on the flat though evocative language typical of the best in noir writing. There is a vitality in the language used early in the book. The author (and translator) were challenging the conventions of noir language to differentiate this book from earlier examples. "In the muggy air, jaws were tearing into breaded meat, lips smacking, vocal chords groaning and interspersing those noises with occasional speech. Tongues emerged to lick greasy chops." "Retirees peered into flaking entrance halls, licking the drool out of their wrinkles." By the the end of the book the author, and maybe the translator, are tired of the book and made no effort to construct a world with careful use of language. Instead the now tough guy P.I. is just smashing guys around in an all too predictable manner.

Melville House...any particular reason why you printed this not inexpensive book on such cheap paper?

Interesting, if a bit strange

There are any number of private eye novelists around, and I'm one of those people who are always looking for something different. This book, a first novel about a man of Turkish descent who works in Frankfurt, Germany, as a private eye, is definitely different. It comes with the usual trappings of a detective novel, but it's a good story nontheless.
Kemal Kayankaya is Turkish by birth but was raised by Germans, and has little left of his heritage. He works in Frankfurt as a private eye, and is very stereotypical: he drinks too much, fools around with prostitutes, cracks wise when he would be wise to be serious, and is doggedly determined to solve his case. In the current installment, a Turkish man has been murdered and his wife thinks the police have no interest in solving the crime because of his race. Kayankaya dives into the case face first, getting into fistfights, having a car chase him, and getting teargassed, in between pistol-whipping various suspects.
This is a good book: I would recommend it. It *does* have the dated feel that a lot of European stuff has in contrast to American movies and television. You always think they're looking to Chandler rather than Robert B. Parker for their inspiration. Everything's *very* hardboiled. That being said, this is a fun book.

A serious book!!

Fortunately, this is not the typical High Speed Newtworks book. Unlike most authors, Stallings goes as deep as required. Beginning with descriptions for ATM and high speed LANs, the book explain how to modelate and estimate the actual network performance, by using statistics models. (An overview of probability and stochastic processes is included).
The mechanisms for improve the network performance (as different queueing strategies), and managing network congestion are explained.
Some IP related topics (routinng protocols, RSVP, Multicast)are also included.
Part 7 (optional for most readers) is concerned with compression and information theory (JPEG and MPEG algorithms are explained).
As you see, a serious book, not a "bubbleware" book.

BAD book

if u want to study high speed networking then please dont buy this book and waste your money. there are many other books which cover the same areas in equal detail. this book will not only confuse you but it will also muddle the existing concepts that u had in mind... stallings is a good writer.. he has written good books in the past.. but this time he has not come up to the level which is expected from him.

Good mathematical analysis

This is a copy from the famous book of Stallings "data and computer networks".
Even the diagrams are the same, but this book does have a tremendous amoubt of numerical computations, so you can satisfy the mathematicians in you. Now that I have had a course in data communication where the other book I mentioned above was used, I understand this book.
This book is definitly not to be the 1st book on datacom, definitely the 2nd. This is an extremely boring book though, it does not invite you to read it, even though it has some very interesting topics in it.

A great book with easy language

My AP Physics C: Mechanics test is this May and I'm excited to take it after reading this fantastic book. The language used is easy to learn unlike many math or science textbooks and the practice tests may be harder but greatly help one know the level of questions that will be asked on the actual test. We'll see how this book fares once I take the actual test, but so far, I'm pretty confident that it will help me reach at least a 4, considering you need to answer at least 50% of the test correctly to achieve a 4.

So far, this product deserves a 5/5-- I acknowledge Princeton's level of writing and effort put into this book.

I received a 5 on the 2012-2013 AP Physics C Test.

an excellent explanation of many concepts

Overall, an excellent explanation of many concepts. However, the first practice test at the beginning of the book is not a great reflection of the actual AP exam. Specifically, the 3rd free response question is to be solved without benefit of a calculator. Solving this particular equation requires estimating a square root to a couple of decimal places, then using the result in multiple calculations. This is not something students will be likely to encounter on the actual exam, except in the calculator-allowed section. As the first calculator-prohibited question, it can really throw the students off if they invest too much time in tedious calculations.

I teach AP calculus and haven't seen College Board questions that require a huge investment in time for calculations that don't really indicate proficiency in the subject matter.

I haven't tried the other practice tests yet but am hopeful that they will more accurately reflect what students can expect to see on test day.

I was having trouble following my teacher so about 5 days before my test I bought this book and just reviewed nonstop. This book helps and does miracles!! I thought I was only going to manage to get a score of 1 on this test but now I have the possibility of obtaining a 4, maybe even a 5!! This book works!!! The practice questions are very helpful along with the step by step process to the answers in the back of the book. The practice tests are very helpful as well. If you believe you need help in AP Calculus AB this book will help you every step of the way to understanding

Forthright, Well-Written Memoir of a Life Steered by Unusual Talents. Believe It or Not.

I confess that books about psychics or paranormal phenomena are not a genre that I read often. It's not that I find anything wrong with the concepts, in themselves, but that the genre is filled with fanciful, poorly written books. "The Reluctant Psychic" intrigued me, though, because its author Suzan Saxman is not someone who advertises or who has sought publicity. Her reputation has been by word of mouth. I thought that might imply that she has genuine talent. And her co-writer, Perdita Finn, is a prolific author of children's books. I wondered if the combination of a low-key psychic and a professional writer might make for an interesting and readable book. It does. "The Reluctant Psychic" is well-written, and I found the first half of the book to be a page-turner.

Perhaps I should clarify what sort of paranormal abilities Suzan Saxman claims to have, as the term "psychic" is vague. She is clairvoyant and regularly sees and communicates with the dead. "The Reluctant Psychic" takes the reader through Saxman's life, from her difficult beginnings as an alienated child plagued by nightmares and tormented by a stern and abusive mother to her happy settlement in Woodstock, New York, where she now owns a shop. Each chapter concludes with a reading that she did for a client at some point in her career, so we see the variety of issues people bring to her and what she is able to do for them. To her credit, Waxman presents not only cases in which she was able to help, but some in which she wasn't or may have done harm.

Saxman's discovery of her abilities, decisions about what she was going to do about them, and explanations of how her abilities work from her point of view are found in the first half of the book, so people seeking information about these phenomena will probably enjoy the first half more than the second. But "The Reluctant Psychic" is a memoir, not just an exposition of paranormal phenomena, so Waxman takes us on her personal emotional journey as well. The book's second half focuses on her interpersonal relationships with her husband and lovers and the evolution of her worldview, very much informed by her unusual abilities but also by her personality. Sometimes she draws conclusions that I would not have drawn from the same information.

I appreciated Saxman's forthrightness and willingness to open herself to criticism. She reveals herself, warts and all, and doesn't seem too concerned that people admire her in the end. Hers is a life complicated by unusual experiences, but it's a messy human life. She vacillates between insecurity in her oddness and finding comfort in it. She struggles to have a normal life that never quite suits her. She tells us what she doesn't see or understand as plainly as what she does. She has a weakness for sexy, charismatic men who aren't necessarily good for her, with mixed results. She comes to believe an angel is guiding her at one point, but when she doubts its existence, it disappears. Was it ever really there? It is an intriguing memoir.

A very resilient woman

This was such an honest biography, I almost felt like a voyeur for reading it. Suzan tells all in this book of her frightful childhood and her coming into her own, for the moment. As much as think The Reluctant Psychic is about her abilities and realizing this made her special, this is also a book about coming to terms with her family’s secrets.

I have to admit that this book almost includes too much. The details of the taunting by her mother and childhood bullies were terrible to read. The truth about her father, and her mother’s husband, were obviously not made up. The lack of love from her mother made me wonder how she came into the world at all, much less with such hope for the future. Sad to see what people put children through. Despite all of that Suzan still retains all of this hope for herself and the coincidences in her life.

She admits that she can’t see anything about her own fate, but then she actually does a few times. Some of the people that feature in this story seem right out of a comic book or something. I have no doubt that people treat clairvoyants differently when they know about them. I just didn’t realize how differently. The people in this book wear costumes and believe in fairies, not that it is all bad. The people in this story seem a little dreamy and very far from the reality I live in. I could see why she calls herself the reluctant psychic, as much as she seemed to just want to be like everyone else she isn’t. People treat her very differently and expect much more from her. It was interesting to learn about how she stumbled through her beginnings. It didn’t really help her to be clairvoyant, except to make her really different from everyone else.

I liked this story, but I was really torn on how to rate it. Due to the genuine person behind this tale, and her unique story, I had to admire her honesty. Not everyone can get up and tell the truth about their skeletons. This is a very resilient woman. I don’t read many biography books, but I believed in Suzan, she seemed real to me. This whole book is delivered in first person. The writer was obviously trying not to skip anything in the delivery. It probably had too many details without enough of the psychic stories we all want to read about. I felt like it needed it to have more of a focused delivery to gain the popularity that this woman’s story probably deserves.

The courageous, honest autobiography of an apparently genuine psychic

In THE RELUCTANT PSYCHIC, Suzan Saxman (with the help of Perdita Finn) honestly and courageously tells the story of her psychic experiences and her struggles once she "came out" as a clairvoyant.

Intertwined with her psychic autobiography is her narrative about growing up in a severely dysfunctional family, with a disturbed abusive mother who recruited Suzan to keep the identity of her real father (and mother's lover) secret. She also shares her uncanny psychic connection with the actor Jack Wild (with whom she initially spends a few days) and a few mentors who helped to her to accept herself and her gift.

I was drawn to read THE RELUCTANT PSYCHIC because, although I am not psychic, I am highly intuitive and have had numerous mystical experiences - enough to know that I perceive the world very differently from most people around me. Both in regard to certain facets of Suzan's family and her inner life, I resonated with her narrative. But I did not relate to her unusual choice of partners (including a husband who life centered on dressing up in medieval costumes, and who was tolerant of her flagrant infidelity) and insensitive behavior in relationships. Yet the honesty of Suzan Saxman's personal sharing moved me and her genuine desire to better herself and respond to the needs of others.

I'm a skeptical believer - believing in the validity of life after death and the possibility of communication with the spirit world - but also believing that there is a lot of new age hogwash about psychic abilities being published and publicized. But the many examples Suzan Saxman provided of her clairvoyant flashes - messages from the dead - were convincing. My guess, however, is that Suzan (and dare I say ghost-author) and Perdita Finn omitted examples of Suzan's gift proving inaccurate, and mostly shared some of her many moments of real attunement.

Suzan readily admitted that he had become carried away with her success as a psychic and somewhat arrogant when she was in her 20s, but in THE RELUCTANT PSYCHIC, she neither comes across as arrogant or as grandstanding and trying to convince us of her legitimacy. Indeed, her willingness to share all her shortcoming and personal crises without resorting to melodrama (and actually at times seeming emotionally detached) helped me to take her seriously. Knowing what havoc deep intuition and mystical experience can have upon one's personality and groundedness - and how at times one may struggle to retain sanity - I can understand why Suzan's Saxman's life "in the real world" has often been bizarre and unstable.

One reason why I was drawn to read THE RELUCTANT PSYCHIC was to garner whatever tidbits of wisdom Suzan had to share "from the other side." Although her understanding of the spirit world is not particularly in depth or profound, it still provides worthwhile reading, and is likely to be illuminating to many readers. Some lines that particularly spoke to me are:

"A lot of psychics are bliss ninnies...The white light is everywhere! But there's evil everywhere, too.....it sneaks into everybody's life....Evil, wherever it comes from....is finally, an absence of empathy."

"....that the Earth has been violated, drilled, abused, and raped and that the Earth herself [is] a living, breathing being that could fight back. And would."

"Sometimes the demons lead us to the angels."

"It's not so much death itself that should frighten us but who we are when we arrive at the moment of death."

No doubt about credibility; the author holds 10 world records!

Gruber's philosophy of "training as a lifestyle" was a paradigm shift to me. Rather than spending 30 minutes in the gym, I will do a few minutes several times a day. Two minutes before having a shower, one minute before lunch, three minutes ... you get the idea. This is TOTALLY different to committing 30 minutes to going to the gym. Living, working and training become one. It's much easier to follow when leading a busy lifestyle. I'm not stressed thinking "oh, I need to go to the gym today." I can workout out almost anywhere. No need for tools. My body is my tool.

(-) The subtitle is useless and misleading. Grube doesn't need a catchy subtitle: he holds 10 world records. 10!
(-) He needs dearly a proofreader and an editor.
(+) The following sentence that summarizes his philosophy very well: "You can bench 300lbs and not be in shape, but you can't do 100 straight push ups unless you are in shape."
(+) For a strong body and lean body, he advocates fast and short training. It makes sense. Compare the bodies of a long-distance runner vs. a sprinter. The former tend to look fragile while the later looks strong.
(+) I love this: if you eat natural (i.e. eat clean), it makes sense to train natural (i.e. only bodyweight exercises).
(+) The book is thin and can be read quickly. Nobody needs another 300 page book.
(-) He is against jogging/running, but forgets the "mental benefits." After 10 hours sitting at a computer, I love to go for a run of 30 minutes, listen to music and switch of my brain. Running can be very therapeutically.
(+) He doesn't ask his readers to do sit-ups. That's great. That means, that he understands the futility of sit-ups.
(+) Grube keeps it very simple. I strongly agree with him, that it's much easier to follow a simple plan continuously. Every day. All year round.
(+) I love this: if you eat natural (i.e. eat clean), it makes sense to train natural (i.e. only bodyweight exercises).
(+) Few people think of pushups as a fat loss exercise. We need to re-think pushups and incorporate it in our daily life.
(+) While there might be no "perfect exercise", the Burpee comes close. You can do it almost anywhere. I'll incorporate Burpee's in my daily life. One minute of Burpee's a few times a day gets you far.

Great Book

This book has pretty much changed the way I look at fitness, It's been kicking my butt and I love every minute of it. I've been doing workouts out of it for my entire special forces battalion and we can't get enough of it. Johnny Grube has pretty much designed the best work-outs I have ever seen. I just made my entire section bear crawl for an entire mile today, never reliazed how under rated the bear crawl is...great core exercise.

a useful rant on body weight conditioning

"Ultimate Physical Fitness in 5 Minutes" is a useful rant. Johnny Grube has given us two sections in this book. The first is a presentation of his Epic Eight body weight exercises (pushups, burpees, prisoner squat thrusts, pullups / chinups, sprints / hill sprints, jumping rope, bear crawls, and step ups). This section, 35 pages, other than grammar and spelling errors, is well done. Grube presents 100 combinations of The Epic Eight with games, cards, and times thrown in for interest. For an individual with well conditioned tendons and joints these combinations make a good contribution to the body weight literature.

The second section is truly a rant. It is a long series of short essays. I suspect these are drawn from his own web page - At first these are interesting and make good points as to the value of the Epic Eight exercises and the body weight approach to conditioning. But the reader soon senses an anger and resentment on the part of the author. Grube insults his reader repeatedly and unnecessarily, using the words such as drunk, stupid and lazy repeatedly. This 43 page long section rapidly become repetitive and redundant. Many of the points on body weight conditioning Grube makes are valid. A few I do not agree with.

I strongly disagree with Grube in his advocacy of "no pain, no gain." One can do the volume and intensity of exercise necessary, without bringing on the injuries and the painful joints that "no pain no gain" brings. I like Grube's advocacy of short workouts scattered throughout the day. One can increase the possible volume, at expense of the intensity, of exercise necessary for strength and mass with several short workouts throughout the day. I strongly agree with Grube that effective workouts can be done outside of the gym with minimal equipment and must less cost. Unless one develops friends to workout with, the major loss is the social aspect of going to the gym. But that social aspect of the gym does not seem to interest Grube. I like Grube's disavowal of supplements and other chemical additives. He bluntly states that in retrospect he did not gain from their use. Grube's expected basic level of fitness is rather high. Very few of us consider a 50 pushup set as a basic level of fitness.

Grube states he earns his living at manual labor. The work he does, may color his perception of "fitness," raising the bar in expectations. Most of us are computer jockeys or have other turtle posture or "C" posture jobs. We are not ready to jump into doing the Epic Eight by the tens or twenties. If your tendons and joints are already well conditioned, and you are ready for 2 or more workouts per day, and know how to use rest to improve your conditioning programs, then this book will add some imaginative combinations of body weight exercises and some arguments for strength and mass gain, and fat loss through body weight conditioning.

Gr 2-5-This thought-provoking collection of 19 tales will resonate with readers familiar with more commonly known fables or parables such as those of Aesop or the Bible. Nunes draws upon Chinese yu-yen, or cautionary tales; some of them date to the 4th and 3rd centuries BCE. She expands the original versions into brief (one to three page) tales accompanied by Tay-Audouard's enticing illustrations. A wry sense of humor runs through these selections, which point out the folly of arrogance, vanity, greed, and other common failings. Some tales celebrate virtues, such as "The Practical Bride" whose resourceful heroine solves her wedding-day dilemma of a poorly made sedan chair without mussing her elaborate wedding headdress. A grazing cow teaches an arrogant musician a lesson in "The Wrong Audience." Other standouts include "Sakyamuni and Lao-Tse" and "Scaring the Tigers"; ironically, arrows fail to scare the tigers but a heavy sheaf of donation requests from the monks makes them beat a hasty retreat. All of the stories benefit from the minutely detailed illustrations, which appear both stylized and naive. Created in pencil and wash on bamboo rag paper using natural elements such as pressed leaves, charcoal, and ground tea, the art is both exquisite and appropriate to the rustic origins of these tales. This is one of those rare books that speaks to all ages. Shiho Nunes brings a thoughtful selection of beautifully illustrated tales to life with the voice of a natural-born storyteller. I am looking forward to reading and discussing them with my children and grandchildren.

Amusing anecdotes showcase the clever and the clueless

A jogging bride, a musician who woos a cow, a noisy thief, rambunctious religionists, mercenary monks, an unemployed dragon slayer: These are some of the characters vividly portrayed in Shiho Nunes' Chinese Fables. The one-to two-page tales, which date from 500 BCE to the 12th century CE, are reminiscent of currently popular flash fiction, rich in detail despite their succinctness. In fact the source for this book is a collection of story lines that Ms. Nunes has fleshed out brilliantly.
Illustrations by Lak-Khee Tay-Audouard are at once charming and sumptuous, with exquisite elaboration.
Chinese Fables is an ideal gift for either children or adults.
